Located in ‘Britains Ocean City’, the University of Plymouth is one of the biggest in the UK. Full of fascinating maritime history and the regional capital for culture, Plymouth is an extremely exciting place to spend your university years. Ideally located on the beautiful South Devon coast, the University of Plymouth
is surrounded by culture, gorgeous scenery, and an endless list of things to see and do. We’ve gathered together a handy guide of the top five reasons you should choose this vibrant city.

1. You’re right by the sea

Unlike many other coastal Universities, the ocean is a stone’s throw away from the University of Plymouth campus, boasting one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the world. The waterfront is the perfect place to watch the waves and take a dip in the sea.

The University of Plymouth is situated right next to The Barbican, a picturesque dockland packed with coffee spots, bakeries, famous fish and chip shops, and vintage stores – great for a waterfront stroll. Beyond the Barbican, Plymouth Hoe is not only a backdrop for Sir Francis Drake’s legendary game of bowls but also home to Smeaton’s Tower – you can take a stroll to the top for incredible views of the city and ocean. At Plymouth Hoe, you’ll also find the Lido, so if you’re not confident enough to swim in the sea, there’s an option for everyone! If you’re feeling more adventurous, there are endless beaches to explore that are just a short drive away from the University of Plymouth.

Bovisand Beach

Around a 20 minute drive away, this is a great locals beach with a coastal path and beautiful picnic spots.

Wembury Beach

A short drive away, Wembury has an iconic Mewstone and is great if you’re a keen surfer.

South Milton

Slightly further afield, a 40-minute drive away is South Milton, which has arguably some of the most scenic beaches in South Devon. This coastline is full of great pubs and a beach shack serving fresh seafood, perfect for weekend adventures.

2. There’s lots to see and do

If a trip to the beach isn’t taking your fancy, there’s plenty to see and do in the heart of Plymouth City Centre. Drake Circus is a great shopping spot just a short walk away from the University of Plymouth. If you’re looking to try something a little bit different, there’s Sutton Harbour where you can visit the world-famous Plymouth Gin Distillery, or just a short walk away is the National Marine Aquarium which is one of the biggest in the UK. Plymouth is also fantastic for foodies and hosts a vibrant nightlife scene. From famous local fish and chip shops to celebrity chef restaurants, you’re spoilt for choice. The Royal William Yard is a renovated group of military buildings now packed with trendy bars and eateries and is also host to a locals food market every Sunday.

For your Friday evening activities, and some downtime after a week of studying, the bars along the Barbican have live music and a great atmosphere. For a big night out, Pryzm nightclub has three rooms and is perfect for dancing the night away. The party doesn’t stop here though, along with North Hill, several bars hold after parties for those who want to keep going into the early hours of the morning.
