Birmingham City Guide
Birmingham is the second largest student city in the UK, with five universities and more than 65,000 students who call it home. There is a wide range of things to do, meaning there is something for everyone.
City Centre
Nights Out
The city centre of Birmingham offers a variety of student events during the week. The best places to go are Broad Street, Digbeth and Acradian in China Town. Events for students happen every weeknight, where cheap drinks and entry to a range of clubs and bars are on offer. Broad Street has a range of clubs that host regular student nights and events. These include Gatecrasher, Players and Walkabout, to name a few. My favourite place to go on a Tuesday is Indi Bar at Arcadian, which plays funky house and soulful R&B. The atmosphere is really vibrant and offers drinks at a reasonable price (a double spirit and mixer is only £2!). Another firm favourite of mine is Rainbow in Digbeth. This venue has a variety of rooms playing different types of music to suit a range of people. They regularly host a variety of DJs for special nights.
If you a looking for somewhere with a more relaxed atmosphere and want to enjoy a cocktail or two with friends, I would definitely recommend both the Slug and Lettuce and Revolution. The Slug and Lettuce offers 2-for-1 cocktails every day and is situated at Brindley Place, which is one of Birmingham’s most stylish hotspots. Brindley Place can be found on the Water’s Edge and offers a diverse café and bar scene featuring elegant interiors, stylish terraces, canalside views and regular free live entertainment. Revolution is situated on Broad Street and also offers 2-for-1 cocktails. It turns into more of a nightclub in the evening and has a great atmosphere that allows you to dance all night long. I would definitely recommend getting their privilege card that lets you access a range of discounts and costs only £4 for a year!
In terms of getting around safely on a night out, I would recommend getting a taxi. There are a number of taxi companies serving the Birmingham area and they usually cost between £1.50 and £2 each per journey.
Places to Eat
The Bullring has a large amount of cafes, eateries and restaurants from which to choose. If you just want a snack or a full meal, there is something for everyone. I would absolutely go to Five Guys if you love a good burger. The burgers are amazing and you are able to choose as many toppings and sauces you want. There is also a wide range of drinks in the soda machine, including Raspberry Coke and Orange Coke! Just be warned, the prices are quite expensive, so maybe go there for a treat every now and again.
Another good place to eat is Pizza Express. Take advantage of having an NUS card as they give you 40% off your bill on Monday and Tuesday, and 20% on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. You can also get discounts using your NUS card at a variety of other chain restaurants, including ASK Italian and Zizzi’s.
Both The Mailbox and Brindley Place have a variety of chain and independent restaurants for you to choose from, including British, Oriental, French and Italian cuisines.

If you love shopping, you have to go to the Bullring, which has more than 160 shops, including Selfridges, Zara and, of course, Topshop. Most shops offer student discounts and regularly increase these to encourage students to purchase.
Another good place to shop is the Custard Factory, which specialises in independent vintage shops that sell clothing, furniture and vinyl. It is known as Birmingham’s creative quarter and is definitely worth a visit.

There are a number of pubs and bars in Selly Oak, which are perfect for students. The Soak is a student hangout close to the University of Birmingham’s main entrance. They serve pub grub during the day and then it comes alive at night. They have ‘Karao-Jokie’ on Sunday nights, which is ideal for having a laugh with friends and letting your hair down.
Another pub to go to is The Bristol Pear; the best nights to go are Tuesdays and Thursdays. ‘Quids in’ is the event on a Tuesday and offers a range of drinks a lot cheaper than normal from 7pm. This is the same chain as the Bristol Pear in Selly Oak. ‘Quids in’ is on a Friday night here, allowing you to get drinks at a cheaper price from 7pm. There is a beer garden, pool tables and sports shown regularly on the big screen.
If you are looking for a more unusual night out, I would recommend going to the Greyhound Stadium situated in Perry Barr. There are a variety of offers and packages, including The Balti Dining Package for £12.50 per person (minimum of 4). This includes your admission, race card, a 2 course Balti Meal and a reserved table for the evening. This is the perfect evening out for something slightly different, rather than just going out drinking.
